Batteries - Tray Refinishing

Years of neglect, exposure to the elements, and battery acid had left the battery tray in pretty poor shape.  I started the project by removing and labeling all the cables and wires along with taking lots of photos.

An inspection revealed that the tray was structurally sound, and suffering mostly from surface rust and corrosion.  With the batteries removed, I set about attacking the rust.  Having the weight of the batteries off the tray also allowed me to clean and lubricate the slides' ball bearings and raceways.

The worst of the rust.

Cleaning the slides and greasing them helped with the smooth motion of the trays.
Lots of scrapping and the use of a coarse wire brush eventually produced a clean surface ready for paint. The paint I used was Hammerite.  It requires no primer or undercoat first.  I applied it with a brush.

Finished project.

Tray retracted into the battery bay.
