Background

After fourteen wonderful years with our 1987 Catalina 22 "Harmony", Laura was ready to move up if we were to continue cruising.  Harmony was sold in July 2001, and I finished the racing season crewing aboard other boats.  My search for the next boat was focused in the Pacific Northwest until a fellow sailor I meet when we were both members of Catalina 22 Fleet 20 in Portland, OR, showed up on my doorstep in January 2002 with the ad for a Catalina 30 mkIII in San Diego.  A quick chat with the owners who lived in Golden Colorado made the boat sound too good to be true.  Routinely professionally maintained and cleaned so the owners could fly into town and go sailing, the boat sounded great, so we made an offer contingent on a survey and a test sail.  The boat passed the survey with flying colors, and we flew into San Diego for what turned out to be a wonderful sail on the bay.  We had the boat trucked north and it was splashed into the Columbia River in February 2002.

We cruised, raced, and daysailed Celtic Myst for six years.  Cruising extended as far east as Beacon Rock State Park, Washington, and as far west as Astoria, Oregon.  The boat earned One-Design Champion status, showed its crew a great time in the 2005 Oregon SixPac race, and introduced a lot of new crew to racing in the Thursday Evening Race Series in the Cruising Class.  Celtic Myst was also a regular host vessel for the Oregon Women's Sailing Association's Wednesday Night Sail where Dale volunteered.  Night sailing on the Columbia River between the I-5 bridge and the I-205 bridge become a real favorite, especially for Laura.

Why did we sell the boat? Each boat is a season, and while we absolutely cherished our time with the Catalina 30 mk III, we also looked forward to experiencing powerboat cruising.

Builder's Description

The New Catalina 30 MARK III has been redefined by incorporating some of the best modern features of our popular C-270 and C-320 designs. The transom and cockpit areas reflect the most significant refinements. The new stern section is now dramatically wider at the deck and curves gracefully to form a very functional and spacious boarding platform. The already famous C-30 cockpit is now even more comfortable than ever with wider coamings for outboard seating and new observation seats built into the stern rail. Low maintenance materials have been used extensively to give you more time to enjoy your C-30. New stainless steel traveler supports improve visibility and reduce friction on halyards.

The Catalina 30 MARK III shares the underbody and rig of earlier Catalina 30's and is eligible to participate in Catalina one design events and Class Association activities.

Below deck, the layout that defined a modern classic has remained true to its heritage but has become even more comfortable and functional with the addition of several thoughtful improvements and subtle refinements.

The galley has been made even larger with the design of new custom countertop surfaces. With the larger counter space has come increases in size and number of cupboards and drawers. An all new dish and cup storage rack better organizes often used items.

The bright new head also makes use of custom counters and larger cabinets.

Varnished teak cabin surfaces are accented by polished brass light fixtures. Natural light has been increased through the addition of three fixed ports in the hull.
