HVAC - Vacuum Control

I knew something was wrong when we purchased our Safari judging from the pile of wires connected to a loose vacuum motor sitting on the floor under the dashboard.  Already on my DIY list as a result of my inspection, I figured this was some previous owners attempt to restore the system.

The ability to redirect air in the system is controlled by vacuum valves.  The vacuum pump establishes a vacuum in a spherical shaped reservoir, and the vacuum is directed to various valves based on the setting of one of the HVAC knobs to the right of the steering wheel.

I purchased is the Dorman 904-214 Mechanical Vacuum Pump for Ford Truck.  The vacuum line from the reservoir was attached to the black inlet of the pump.

Installation was easy.  Only the vacuum line to the reservoir and 12 vdc power was needed.  Once the vacuum is achieved, it shuts off.

Installation complete and vacuum valve control functionality fully restored.
