Installing a Flagstaff at the Stern

When I acquired my Capri 22, it had two antennas mounted on the stern rails.  The port antenna supported a stereo radio that I removed from the boat, and the starboard antenna supported an old VHF radio.  Both antennas used Forespar rail mounts and testing of the VHF antenna showed it was no longer functioning.

To add a flagstaff to the boat, I repurposed the antenna components.  The nonfunctioning VHF antenna was sluffing off fiberglass from long exposure to the sun, so I cut it down to the length I wanted for the flagstaff and then painted it with high gloss white paint.  A wood dowel was inserted into the tip of the former antenna to serve as a backing for the stainless steel eye-screw installed in the tip for securing the flag.

The raw edge of the cut end was covered with the hollow ball from a black ball bungee used with carport tarps.

A length of line was attached to the bottom of the flag, the half-hitched to the flagstaff, and then run down to a small cleat near the base of the flagstaff.  The cleat was secured to the flagstaff using a wood dowel inserted into the base and then two wood screws.

I also made a cover for the flag using Sunbrella.

The flagstaff has worked out great.  When I want the flag out, I just screw the flagstaff onto the mount
