On my past Catalina 22's I used a Davis Tiller Tamer with much success. The installation was simple and the operation met my objective of being able to lock the tiller in place when I wanted to step away from the helm for a few seconds.

As I contemplated a solution for my Capri 22, the Davis Tiller Tamer was my default plan until I got introduced to the TillerClutch by
WaveFrontMarine.com. At three times the price of the plastic Tiller Tamer product, the aluminum TillerClutch had one very attractive feature, its quick-action lever.

Another upgrade over my Catalina 22 solution was to replace the two jam-cleats mounted on the transom, with two Nite Ize CamJam carabiners. The CamJams make tensioning the line running to the TillerClutch much easier.

How Has It Worked Out?
The TillerClutch has exceeded my expectations. It does a great job holding the tiller even in heavy conditions. I really appreciate the quick action of the lever, no more twisting a knob to engage and disengage. The Nite Ize CamJam carabiners are awesome. I just clip them onto the base of my backstay and tension. As far as the extra cost, yes it was worth it, but with that said, I wouldn't hesitate to use the Davis Tiller Tamer if the TillerClutch wasn't in my budget.
