I have daysailed and raced my boat single-handed a lot, and one of the upgrades that has made the process easier is upgrading to self-tailing winches for the sheets. At prices approaching $600 per winch, it seemed like too much of an extravagance until West Marine was offering a two for one sale on Lewmar winches.

Predictably, the base-plate hole pattern for the existing Lewmar #7 and the Lewmar #14 winches did not match. After removing the winches, I filled the existing holes with epoxy and then drilled new holes. The new holes were drilled oversize, filled with epoxy, and then redrilled for the fasteners that hold the winches.
