Washington Park

Parked near Green Point.
The City of Anacortes has an incredible collection of parks and Community Forest Lands (ACFL).  The ACFL alone covers nearly 2,800 acres within Anacortes, encompassing a mosaic of forest, wetlands, lakes, and meadows.

The 220 acre Washington Park juts into Rosario Strait on the western edge of Anacortes. One of my favorite places in the park is Green Point. With picnic sites, benches, and car pullouts, the point is a prime location for viewing the sunset as you look across Rosario Strait and toward the San Juan Islands.

Green Point exists atop a rugged outcropping of rocks, covered by a thin layer of grass that goes dormant in the summer.  As with much of the San Juan Islands, the trees come right down to the waterline unless they have been beaten back by storms.

Besides day use, Washington Park also has a campground for tents and small trailers.  I wouldn't try navigating the campground in my thirty-five foot Safari motorhome.
